Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for membership as a Legionnaire in the American Legion, individuals must have served at least one day of active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces during eligible wartime periods under honorable conditions. Service is recognized from April 6, 1917, through Novemeber 11, 1918 (Word War I) and from December 7, 1941, to the present, per the “Legion Act.” Active-duty military members are also eligible. applicatns need to provide proof of service, such as a DD form 214, and can apply through local posts.

The Sons of the American Legion (SAL) and American Legion Auxiliary (ALA)

S.A.L. and A.L.A. honor military legacies by welcoming family members of veterans. SAL membership is open to male decendants of American Legion members or eligible veterans, while American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) membership includes female relatives and, in some cases, male spouses of veterans. Both groups support veterans, mentor youth, and promote community service, continuing the tradition of patriotism and service.
